Sequatchie County Indians win football opener
The score from last night’s game at Sequatchie County has made it onto the News Channel 9 website.
Friday Night High School Football: August 22, 2008
| Pigeon Forge | 12 |
| Sequatchie County | 37 |
Learned something new from my husband about the way scores are presented with this one too. Apparently the home team is always on the bottom! I’ll be sure to follow that convention from now on. :-)
There’s also a good recap of the football action from Chief Sequatchie over at the Sequatchie County Indians blog.
Want to know the Sequatchie Valley Jamboree scores?
There’s talk that the Sequatchie County Indians might play well this year. The last few years of Sequatchie County Football haven’t been great (I admit I don’t watch the games and don’t know much about what’s been happening.)
For a great summary of the Sequatchie County action during the Jamboree, see Chief Sequatchie’s post Sequatchie destroy’s Eagles in Jamboree Action! on the Sequatchie County Indians blog.
There’s a set of posts about it in the CoachT.com forums.
Here’s a summary of the Jamboree scores:

August 13th is the first day of school
August 13th, Wednesday, is the first day of the 2008-2009 school year in Sequatchie County (for the public schools). Don’t forget to set those alarm clocks! I know I’ll have mine set, early enough for a little extra time in the morning until we can get used to a routine.
Buses might run a little early as the drivers work on getting their own schedule set, so be ready to send your kids out a few minutes early for the first few days.
Also, according to the paperwork I was given at registration, school lunch prices have increased this year to $1.75 each day. Breakfast now costs $1.25. Be prepared to send more money this year for your child’s school lunches.
Griffith requires clear or mesh backpacks but where do you get them?
This year, just like year’s past, Sequatchie County’s Griffith Elementary School requires students to use a clear or mesh backpack. I hate the clear, because the plastic rips quickly and stuff starts to get lost, usually within a week or two of the start of school. Mesh is the way to go if you want a little longevity from your kid’s backpack.
So, after having no luck searching locally for a mesh backpack for my Griffith Elementary student, I called the school for a direct suggestion of where to look.
I was told to try the Kimball, Tennessee Wal-Mart, but since that’s a good distance away from here, I decided to check out Wal-Mart online. They have free site-to-store shipping, so if you find something you like, you can pick it up at our local Walmart. I found several mesh backpacks to choose from.
Mesh backpack selections from Walmart.com:
Update: We found clear at Kimball but no mesh.
The Sequatchie County Fair starts tomorrow
The Sequatchie County fair starts tomorrow, running from August 9 to August 16 and will take place on the Sequatchie Fair Grounds.
I don’t have any confirmation on it yet, but I believe the Carnival starts on Tuesday night, with the exhibits open to the public mid to late next week. So after you take a few rides at the Carnival, head into the old Middle School and see who won prizes in the different competitions.
Location of the Fair
The Sequatchie County Fair is held at the old Middle School behind Heard Street. See the map below.

- The Sequatchie Fair website - The site hasn’t been updated for 2008 but you can get an idea of what kinds of activities and events the Fair will host from last year’s information.
August 8th is Registration Day at Sequatchie County schools
Don’t forget to take your kids in for registration on Friday (August 8, 2008). The first full day of school will be on the following Monday, August 13th.
Everything will go much smoother for you and your child if you don’t miss registration! Registration is especially important for the younger kids, so you know what supplies they need and what money you might need to send before classes start.
The 2008 Sequachee Valley Jamboree schedule
Over at the Sequatchie County Indians blog, Chief Sequatchie has posted the Sequachee Valley Jamboree schedule. According to Chief Sequatchie, the Jamboree will be on August 15th (Friday) at 6 p.m. Central time.
Write for this site - Sports writer needed!
I need a Sequatchie County resident who follows the school sports programs to write for this site. This will be a volunteer position, and it’s open to anyone who can post updates about the school sports programs, game announcements and score reports. The posts can be written with full attribution to the author or anonymously. You decide what you prefer as the author. If you follow only one sport and would still like to write for the site, I’m open to having more than one sports writer for the site.
I prefer to work with someone willing to keep the sports report section updated regularly, but the schedule is certainly flexible! If you think you’d like to write for this site, send me an email at pw@sequatchie-county.com and put “Sports writer” somewhere in the subject line.
Sequatchie County High School doesn’t meet achievement standards
Sequatchie County High School made it into a recent article on the Chattanooga Times Free Press website. Unfortunately, the mention isn’t exactly great news.
Sequatchie County High School is in the list of High Priority schools here:
From Tennessee.gov
Under No Child Left Behind (NCLB), schools and school districts are measured on whether the students meet performance benchmarks in math, reading and attendance for grades 3-8 and math, English and graduation rate for high schools. Schools that do not meet the achievement standards for two years are deemed high priority.
From Chattanooga Times Free Press:
Five schools in the region failed to make “adequate yearly progress” under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, according to state records released Monday.
Cleveland Middle School, Sequatchie County High School, Jasper Middle School, Marion County High School and South Pittsburg High School are designated as “high priority,” which means they have missed the same benchmark two years in a row.
Under NCLB, schools and districts are measured on whether students in third through eighth grade meet benchmarks in math, reading and attendance. High schools are judged on math, English and graduation rates.
Education officials in Sequatchie County did not return calls seeking comment Monday. Those in Cleveland and Marion County said they are working to improve high priority schools.
My personal feelings on the subject are that the no child left behind act isn’t that great anyway. It still doesn’t make me that happy to know that our school hasn’t done well. Anyone else feel that way?
